Beyonce Wasn't Built in a Day
I recently saw an inspirational post on Instagram that made me pause and consider its wisdom. I tend to follow a few motivational people, because let’s face it, as we sludge through everyday life, most of us can use all the uplifting messages we can get.
Many of these quotes are encouraging passages, bits of wisdom on how great life can be if you just put forth that extra effort it takes to achieve your goals. Others are reminders to appreciate what you already have in front of you. These passages tend to make you pause for a moment and take a quick inventory of all you have to be happy for. Then you go about your day and forget the excerpt as quickly as you read it.
There is one every once in a while though, that makes me ponder my existence, digs into my soul and makes me truly take a hard look at the path I’m on.
The quote I’m speaking about?
Beyonce Wasn’t Built in a Day
Tell me, how true is this? As society we commonly use this phrase in the context of the completion of Rome, but who can actually relate to an ancient city half of us have never even been to?
Think about it.
We once saw Beyoncé bust out onto the 90’s scene as the lead singer of Destiny’s child, belting songs like “No no no no” and “Say My Name”. And isn’t that what we’ve all come to do? There is never a point in music history, since she’s graced us with her presence, that we’re not screaming her name at the top of our lungs.
She's gone from a plain ol Texan girl, to music legend and Icon.
Her life and career, just like any of ours, has had its share of phases. She suffered from depression for a year in the late 90’s, after going through public ridicule during Destiny’s Child’s manager change.
She’s been a “Survivor” through it all though, releasing awesome uplifting songs that make us “independent women” proud to be who we are. She’s a wife and a mother, all while following her dreams. She’s written songs about bulimia and postpartum, showing us she’s nowhere near as perfect as the media likes to portray her.
Now that’s someone we can relate to.
Who out there hasn’t felt the pull of something deep? Who hasn’t struggled with their identity, with their place in the world?
I constantly go through an inward fight.
Today I hate writing.
Tomorrow I will love it.
Last week I sucked at it.
And next month I will most likely quit.
Again
Then there's a rare occasion that I write an awesome piece and I think I’m a rockstar.
Regardless of where you’re at in your life, no matter how far away your goals may seem, like Beyoncé one thing remains true.
You must work it.
You have to become Sasha Fierce, be “Bootyliscious”, and “Drunk in love” with yourself, because if you don’t believe in what you can do, who will? Just know it takes time to create an empire. Nothing amazing is easy to accomplish, and it certainly cannot be built in a day.
